*Correction at bottom*
Ok, so... Some of you know, some of you don't know, that my family is made up of rebellious Republicans. I say rebellious because most Republicans go against the mainstream media. My family sometimes takes that to another level. (Now don't get all mad or offended, mi familia!)
As we all know, right now the media is harping on how bad the economy is. Ev-ery-day. My family is determined that the media is exaggerating, and yes sometimes they are. Buuuut...
Ahem.
My family is right in the middle of the sagging economy. My husband is in the process of helping to close down the company he has worked for, for a little over 9 years (by the way, this is a company that has been in business since the 1930s). I know I am scared to death and even though he won't admit it, he is too. My husband has applied for over 30 jobs, and so far not one has called him back. He has a bachelors degree and tons of experience (construction, management). It.is.scary. When someone isn't going through what we are, it is easy to say that the economy isn't all that bad. He can't find a job. I have a brother in law that is a nurse, and they have laid-off quite a few nurses at his hospital. (NURSES TOO?! yes.) Another brother in law works for a different hospital and same thing.. lay-offs. My father in law found out a project that would have carried his job through next year has now been cancelled and after March 1st it isn't guaranteed he will have a job.
I know we won't be homeless or starve, but I don't want to lose my house, have to uproot my children from all they have ever known, etc... All I am saying is that it is quite upsetting when someone is going through what we are, and people around you are saying "it isn't that bad".
I will put my soapbox away now.
Thank you.
*CORRECTION* My husband told me that he has applied for at least 100 jobs so far.

I am so sorry. I didn't mean to make light of your or any one else's situation. My point was that the media makes it sound like we are in the Depression of the 1930's and its all Bush's fault. Watch how after the annointed one takes office that things are suddenly not so bad. Trust me, I know how hard it is to get a job - why do you think I'm still making only $10.00/hr when I am a trained and certified Kitchen and bath designer. It's all cyclical - the housing market here seems to be slowly turning for the good. I try to only worry about today cause the future can be overwhelming. I love ya and hope I didn't offend - thats the last thing I ever wanted to do.
No, you didn't offend me. And it wasn't just you. There have been a few people that said these types of things and I wasn't offended. It's more hurt than offended I guess. I know you, and for that matter anyone else in the family, would never want to hurt me. I suppose it just felt trivialized when it was mentioned by at least four different people in this manner.
I love you very much!! :)
Oh man, can I ever relate to this one! I have a family of staunchly partisan peeps too and they simply don't waver, ever. I pride myself on being able to make a decision based on the issue and not on a party line. They drive me crazy, especially when they go bashing ANYTHING the opposite party does.
times are so tough right now. it has got to get better soon. right!?!
what was it people said??? and was i one of them that said it???? :(
